The Empire Strikes Back is my favorite Star Wars movie and I've been itching at putting a 'frozen in carbonite' joke in Alien and Dog....this seemed like a good opportunity (Geel's ray gun can do all sorts of neat stuff apparently)...

I am not a fan of Lebron James AT ALL (Celtics fan). Very glad the Mavs won the championship! But dang, the media sure is ripping Lebron James apart for his lackluster performance in the Finals..... I ALMOST feel bad for the guy....

I thought it'd be a good time to check in on the bad guys of Alien and Dog (General Zlorr and his evil robot). They're up to no good, but still running into the usual ineptness that often plagues them. I haven't dug into the backstory of these evil characters and why they want to destroy Geel and Kevin- I'm sure it will be fleshed out at some point or another though!

On a side note, and maybe there's some other cartoonists that can help me out here - I have digitally colored my work in Photoshop in RGB mode. This week I was printing some pieces to send out, and the colors are all outta whack- apparently to print the work needs to be in CMYK. So I've been changing my work to CMYK (this piece was done in CMYK mode) and the colors just ain't the same- not as bright or vibrant....is there any way to preserve my colors and still get a decent print done and show my intended display of my work??? Any help on the matter is greatly appreciated...

Alien and Dog has been around for a year now folks. I really love doing the cartoon, even though the last couple of months haven't been extremely productive. I plan to continue and further develop the characters, and perhaps get an ongoing storyline going, rather than standalone pieces every time- maybe a short children's book or comic book type thingy. I also would like to get some products available for sale- like t-shirts/coffee mugs, or signed prints, etc. We'll see if I can get that ball rollin' anytime soon...

Anyhow, this cartoon is a throwback to the very first Alien and Dog. I wanted to update the original piece, as my techniques and characters have been refined (and they have names now!). Enjoy, and please keep checking out Alien and Dog!

Well the summer is winding down. Hope everyone had all kinds of fun. When I think of summer and fun, I think of big outdoor music festivals. Geel and Kevin are rockin' out to Weezer today and even decide to give crowd surfing a try (which is fun until the security guard nabs you up front and you lose your good concert viewing position...)

Well, being the newbie at my job I didn't have the most desirable schedule my 1st week- not a lot of time for hardcore cartooning. However, next week looks a lot better and I promise more Alien and Dog. Thanks so much to my followers and to those who dig and stick with my little cartoon.

There sure is a lot of hoopla in the sports world about what team Lebron James will be going to play for next season. Apparently he's even being persuaded to play for some intergalactic basketball teams....

Tidbits- The Pluto Predators is a homage to the Arnold movie 'Predators' (there's a new one coming out this summer too).

Oh, and don't ask me how Kevin and Geel are able to go hang by Lebron James. I guess the two of them are kind of a big deal!

I love the heat and you will never hear me complain about hot weather. I think my old car isn't liking it though....and some recent troubles with it has inspired this cartoon....

This will be the fourth appearance of General Zlorr- the petite, timid bad guy in Alien and Dog who wants to destroy Earth and take over the galaxy (and it's the 3rd appearance of his evil robot- we'll have to see if he gets fixed if he wants to show up again....)

I'm not into soccer too much, but my girlfriend is. We got up at 9 am yesterday to go somewhere to watch the game. There are a lot more soccer fans down south here than where I am from! Of course, the score was 0- 0 after regulation, but I must say- that USA goal in additional overtime was pretty thrilling and the place we were at went wild! Maybe I will finally become a soccer fan??

I have to thank follower Robin Cain for this cartoon. I was wondering if I should have my characters move off to Texas, since I just did this myself. She thought it was a good idea and mentioned they should be sporting some boots and cowboy hats. Well I am all moved into my new place in Texas! Whew, it was an adventure. Not posting any Alien and Dog cartoons has really been killing me! I don't have internet yet (I'm in the library right now) so that's the next step. I have about 3 new cartoons all drawn up and will be able to post them very soon though! Yay! While packing up all my stuff to move, I came across some old photos. I found one of my dog Penny that shows her happily hanging her head out the car window while driving. Dogs just love to do that and it's hilarious! I will notice other dogs doing it as well driving around sometimes. So I had to incorporate Kevin doing it in Geel's UFO - with disappointing results.

Anyhow- here's the original photo of my dog Penny that inspired this Alien and Dog cartoon.

The weather has been great up here in Wisconsin this week- lots of sun!
And I'll be seeing a lot more of it me thinks as I am planning to move to Texas early next month! It's the first big move for me and definitely has been keeping me very busy lately with planning, packing, etc.....I sure hope I can keep up with Alien and Dog in the meantime, but until I get all moved in the cartoon postings may be a lil less frequent :-(
But I sure hope it goes well and everything works out for me down there!

The importance of breakfast!

This cartoon basically sums up some feelings of mine on various breakfast cereals available for children. There is a LOT of money spent on the promotion of cereals towards kids (many that include beloved cartoon characters!)- and many of these cereals are packed with ungodly amounts of sugar. The best way to start off the morning everyday growing up? Geel seems to be getting quite the sugar buzz....

I must apologize for the slight delay of a new cartoon. Busy work week (I do not make a living off of my artwork as of now, but hopefully someday!) and a freshly broken scanner to boot....

I am also a big supporter of the beard. I grew one a little over a year ago and have had it since. I'm a dude that could shave his face twice a day, but now with a beard I simply have to maintain it- much easier. Plus the lady now prefers me with one- win-win situation( I don't imagine Geel will keep his though). I thought Alien and Dog needed a bad guy! I haven't named him yet but he's the little orange alien with his evil robot in this cartoon. Apparently he is a general of some sort, and expect him to pop back up in Alien and Dog (with a name)! I originally came up with the little character in a sketch I recently posted on my other blog called The Cartoon Life- you can see that sketch HERE.

I also put away the dialogue bubbles and placed the text below the cartoon in this one, just to see how it worked. I haven't decided if I like it or not...

It seems like a lot of people at one point in their life (or at least in the area I live) have had a bat get into their house some way or another. That got me thinking.... what would Geel and Kevin do in this dramatic situation??

Tidbits- well, it appears Geel enjoys guns. One of my first Alien and Dog cartoons had Kevin chewing on Geel's ray gun (of the pistol variety)...and now it appears above that Geel has larger weaponry as well in the household. Hhhmmmm....probably shouldn't be messin' with him.

I'm more of a Trekkie, but who doesn't like Star Wars.....well, the original trilogy anyways. I've always liked the TIE fighter- so simple, yet menacing! It doesn't look too evil with Geel and Kevin driving it around though....

St. Patty's is one of my favorite holidays. I've got a lot of irish in me (I'm a dark haired one, we're the more surly ones!) so I like to go all out- make the corned beef and cabbage, dress up in all green with shamrocks, go out to the taverns, etc etc). It's also the time of year I like to remember my grandfather- he LOVED St. Patty's and played the bagpipes with his kilt on and everything. So it's an important day for me as well. I really enjoyed incorporating the holiday into Alien and Dog- obviously Geel the alien isn't accustomed to pounding beers like so many irishmen seem to be able to do!

Tidbits: -the bow tie on Kevin the dog is a little inside gag for me- My grandpa would always put these big green bow ties that lit up on his two dogs for St. Patty's... :)

-the girl in the bar is modeled after my lovely girlfriend- I think she secretly likes popping up in my cartoons...

I love music and rock music in particular, but I had never really gotten into Pink Floyd very much in the past beyond the radio hits. Recently, I decided to give their vast discography some listens and there is some great music to be found on their many albums. And some pretty crazy space rock stuff that can be interesting too. I thought Pink Floyd's fascination with space and interstellar matters would make for perfect listening material for Geel the alien!

Next Alien and Dog: a Valentine's Day themed cartoon!

I would like to introduce...

...the names of Alien and Dog! I've thought long and hard about what I wanted to name my characters (probably too long and too hard, which can be bad!). And I have decided on...Kevin: Kevin is the dog. I wanted a very un-dogish name, if that makes any sense. A more human name adds to the human like qualities that the dog possesses, such as the ability to talk, his intelligence, etc. He may or may not have taken the name Kevin from the artist's favorite basketball player Kevin Garnett??? :)

Geel: pronounced 'Gah-eel'. I had a hard time coming up with the alien's name. I thought about weird alien names or a more common human like name, or a mixture of the two. I also wanted something short and not too complex. Eventually I decided on Geel.

So there you have it finally, the names of my two main characters. I also hope to have more supporting characters come up in cartoons as well. So, while the characters now have names- the cartoon will and always will be called 'Alien and Dog'!

The views expressed by my characters do not necessarily reflect the views of the artist, haha. And if you haven't seen the movie 'Avatar', the cartoon won't make much sense.... but I really enjoyed 'Avatar' and the 3D was quite impressive as well. Definitely worth going to see!

You also may notice I put some other alien characters in the movie theater audience. I figured that my alien character wasn't the only extraterrestrial on Earth - that there were more that have decided to come live and join our way of life - hey, it could happen someday! I thought it would make for a fun universe to play with in my cartoon (that and I enjoy drawing quirky little monster/alien guys!).

It's been a lil while- busy holiday for me, hence the short break from 'Alien and Dog', but lots of fun and holiday cheer was had! Hope y'all had a great one too. Now we got the new year coming up, and 'Alien and Dog' would like to wish everyone a very happy and very safe happy new year! Expect lots more 'Alien and Dog' in 2010!

I would also like to give some big time props out to Sid Azin, a great cartoonist and creator of the popular comic strip 'Galaxy Corps', which can be viewed at www.galaxycorps.com. Sid's blog has recently been showcasing artist's work and cartoon strips and I was most flattered to have him find my work and then proceed to post and promote 'Alien and Dog' this week on his site.

I definately felt the need to do a cartoon involving shopping for gifts. I also must apologize for the delay in a new cartoon- I usually like to get a new one up at least once a week. I had a good Alien and Dog Thanksgiving themed cartoon drawn up, but just wasn't entirely pleased with the final product....ah well....soooo, now that I have a new cartoon up- maybe I'll go do a little bit of x-mas shopping.... :)
